Kavafis [kav-], K. (Konstantinos) P., griechischer Lyriker, * Alexandria 17. 4. 1863, † ebenda 29. 4. 1933, Sohn einer aus Konstantinopel stammenden Familie;
lebte als Kind in Großbritannien, 1882–85 in Konstantinopel, danach in Alexandria – der Stadt, die in seiner Dichtung zum Symbol für das Leben, für menschliches Glück und Scheitern wurde.
