1901 in Washington (D. C.) unter dem Namen National Bureau of Standards (bis 1988) gegründetes metrologisches Staatsinstitut der USA; Sitz heute: Gaithersburg (MD) und Boulder (CO). Das NIST ist maßgebend für alle Einheiten des Messwesens und oberste Eichbehörde der USA.
