Polyhydroxybuttersäure, ein Polyester aus der Gruppe der Polyhydroxyalkanoate; Polyhydroxybuttersäure ist eine biologisch abbaubare Polyhydroxycarbonsäure. Sie wird biotechnologisch in Fermentern aus Zucker, Alkohol oder CO₂/H₂-Gemischen produziert und als biologisch abbaubares Verpackungsmaterial verwendet (biologisch abbaubare Werkstoffe, Biokunststoffe), außerdem als resorbierbares chirurgisches Nahtmaterial.
